Torfa means “The tongue of the reef”, Nugar describes a road with holes and rocks, a road you have to be careful when travelling on. The reef system of Abu Nugar is so full off small reefs and pinnacles that fishermen named it after a bumpy road. This dive site is also known as Shaab Abu Nugar. From the north end of the Abu Nugar reef system, the tongue reaches out towards the east with a big pinnacle in the middle. The mooring lines are placed on the south side of this pinnacle. You start your dive with the reef on your left shoulder coming up to the actual Tongue, or Torfa. A few meters on your right you will now see a small crater-like lagoon with a depth of about 5 meters.

On the other side of the ridge you will find a big brain coral and a coral tower a bit up the slope. You can head out over the plateau to the drop off where you find a lovely coral garden with table coral and coral lines pointing towards the reef. Coming up shallower, closer to the wall you will find that the Torfa continues on the west side of the pinnacle. Follow this path until it is time to turn around.

On the way back to the boat it is a good idea to ascend to safety stop depth a little bit earlier because the top of the reef is very pretty with a lot of table corals. Also it is easy to miss when it is time to cross the Torfa back to the boat if you are swimming along the bottom. When you see the big brain coral and the small tower its time to pass over the ridge again and after a few minutes you will see the moorings.
