Marine biology lectures on endangered sea turtles, sharks and ray species 2014-08-23

For the first time Colona Divers and experienced Marine Biologist Rowan Byrne (Fellow of the Society of Biology) will be offering a series of guided dive trips as a package to various dives sites around Marsa Alam. The package will include a series of marine biology lectures on endangered sea turtles, sharks and ray species and dugongs. These can all be found diving with Colona divers around Marsa Alam. Colona divers have been diving in the Red Sea since 1977 and we are happy to announce that we have teamed up with such an experienced marine biologist such as Rowan Byrne. Each day before each dive trip a series of lectures will be presented so that divers can understand more about the species they are about to dive with and they environment which they live.

In the evenings, an experienced marine biologist will give talks on the marine environment and brief you on the next days dive activities. He will come with you to guide the snorkel and point out some of the wonders of the ocean on an all-day field trip.

The event will take place in November 2014.

UV-photosafari with Peter Segerdahl 2014-04-03

3 times 77! 2014-02-22

We just had a very happy man by the name Bengt Nordenbrand joining us on one of our snorkel trips in El Gouna. He visited Egypt as a diver the first time in 1977. Together with 4 of his friends from the Stockholm dive club Tången they flew to Eilat. To save on the luggage cost they were wearing their weight belts (with weights) and tried to pass the security check at the airport. Lets say it created a little confusion among the security staff! Once arrived in Eilat they rented a car which could load all their equipment and then they travelled down the east coast of the Sinai peninsular diving at new locations every day. To help them find the right spots they had a guide book they found in Sweden. They had amazing dives and came as far as the Ras Mohamed National Park, before they had to turn around and head back home.

So why 3 times 77?

Bengt dived in the Red Sea in 77.
 Bengt is 77 years old.
Bengt went snorkelling with Colona, who has been in the Red Sea since 77.

Samadai Under New Management 2013-02-01

Samadai, also known as "Dolphin house" is considered one of the world's leading dolphin retreats. This strategic and precious dolphin sanctuary will be coming under new management as of 2013. General Mohamed Kamel, Governor of the Red Sea, has issued a new decree handing over management of Samadai to HEPCA.

The story of Samadai began in 2004, when various community members started sharing disturbing reports of unsustainable practices and harassment of dolphins taking place at the site. Immediate action had to be taken and our community rallied behind a massive campaign, which brought the Samadai issues to the spotlight.

As a result of our mobilization, Red Sea Governor Sayed Abu Rida issued a decree in 2004 protecting this site and regulating all tourism activities. The declaration designated Samadai as a protected area and a management plan was subsequently implemented. Although Samadai was beyond the border of the protected areas; the main reason behind the declaration was the protection of the resident spinner dolphins, which were under great threat.

The management plan separated the dolphin habitat into a zoning system and access to the site was limited to 200 visitors per day. A visitor's fee was also set to limit accessibility and these revenues were allocated towards supporting national park services, as well as mooring installation and maintenance by HEPCA. A monitoring program was also established to collect data on the impacts these visitations are having on the dolphins and their habitat.

In the 9 years since the Samadai management plan was first started; it's become apparent that the site has been poorly managed. HEPCA has received numerous complaints and reports from dive centers about irresponsible practices still taking place. The demand for this strategic site has been in decline due to lack of vision and visitor engagement. Crucial information about this unique site and the resident dolphins has not been provided. Educational media and awareness raising tools have been lacking and the monitoring program was not sustained. Many visitors have expressed dissatisfaction with the experience due to the lack of information or presence of qualified personal.

With this new decree, HEPCA will take full charge of managing this important resource in collaboration with our partners. To commemorate this new initiative, HEPCA will be offering free excursions to Samadai for school children and local residents every Friday.
